Journal of Occupational Safety and Health 19: 433-447 (2011)
to “often” was between 25〜50%, in which the respondents had higher perceived pain frequency for shoulder and wrist.
In the assessment of vision, hearing, and finger symptom levels, 5〜7 people out of 33 scored more than 5 for visual and hearing difficulty, and finger tingling numbness (15〜210/o). After subtracting the missing values, the ones with hand and finger numbness were analyzed to be 15 people (45.5%). The odd ratio (OR) of hand vibration and finger numbness is 6.75 with a 95% confidence interval (Table 5),showing that the serious value of the perceived finger nerve function abnormal issue is noteworthy.
In the assessment of respiratory system, 2 out of 54 people had asthma (3.6%); most people had coughs (19, 16.1%). In the hearing assessment, 19 people (35.1%) had buzzing in the ears after work, and 18 people expressed that they could not often hear others or had others think of talking loudly (33.3%). We further used the chi-square test to analyze the relation between exposure and physiological response, but found no significant result. This may have been related to the small size of questionnaire sample. However, the abovementioned data show that these people may
have had hearing barriers, and they should be referred for further hearing testing.
After comparing the abovementioned results and the previous “analysis study of the stone workers health examination result” [1], it is found that:
A. The prevalences of cough, asthma and shortness of breath are found about 10-20%, and there is no significant difference.
B. The perceived musculoskeletal discomfort percentage (>50%) is higher than that of the previous study (<50%)
C. The perceived hearing loss symptom ratio (〜40%) is higher than that of the previous study (<25%)
The design of the two study questionnaire was not completely the same. The musculoskeletal or hearing questions of the previous study were few and simple, and thus, it may have resulted in the underestimated trend. However, after combining the two study results, it can be seen that musculoskeletal discomfort and hearing loss impact the health of 20〜50% workers. The significant workplace noise and vibration values tested by the study can be the supporting evidence of the health impact.
